Clifford Nickson (1903-1993) was a British landscape artist best known for his atmospheric studies of the English countryside. His main focus was depicting the rural topography of southern England, particularly Kent, Surrey and Suffolk. He primarily worked in watercolour and pencil, favouring loose brush strokes and delicate washes to capture the changing light across buildings and landscapes. 

Our collection of Nickson paintings consist of 30 watercolours of landscapes and farm buildings, of which five are of Sussex scenes, six are of Surrey, and 19 are Kent. They were bequeathed to the Wye Rural Museum Trust in 2005 and toured several public library galleries. Since 2010, they have been on public display in County Hall, Maidstone, Kent. We also hold several of Nickson’s sketchbooks in our collection.
